Halfdan was half-brother of King Olaf the Saint and brother of King Harald who died in 1066 in a battle in England. When King Olaf asked him what he would like most to have, he said "cows". When asked how many he replied "So many that when they were watered they would stand thickly around the whole pond".

Halfdan is not reference directly by Burke's Peerage, but is implied by them stating that his daughter Bergliot was a "niece of Harald III Hardradi of Norway", who is Halfdan's brother.
