John was born about 1342 in Moyarshire,Scotland. John's father was Patrick V Dunbar Earl of March and his mother was Isobel 'Black Agnes' Randolph Countess of Moray. His paternal grandparents were Patrick 'The Competitor' Dunbar IV; Earl of Dunbar; 7th and Marjorie Comyn; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Of Moray Randolph and Isobel Stewart. He had a brother and a sister, named George and Agnes. He was the second oldest of the three children.-
