Second emperor of Rome (14-37 A.D.). Son of Tiberius Claudius Nero and
Livia Drusilla; adopted by Emperor Augustus when the latter married his
mother (38 B.C.); carefully educated. Commanded expedition to Armenia (20
B.C.) and with brother Nero Claudius Drusus against the Rhaetians (15
B.C.); consul (13 B.C.); on death of Drusus recalled to Germany (9 B.C.);
again consul (7 B.C.); tribune (6 B.C.); forced by Augustus to divorce
his wife Vipsania Agrippina (11 B.C.) and to marry Julia, daughter of
Augustus; retired to Rhodes (6 B.C.-2 A.D.); made his heir by Augustus (4
A.D.); led Roman armies in many campaigns in Germany, Dalmatia, and
Pannonia (4- 14 A.D.). Became emperor (14 A.D.); at first wise and
beneficent; later, esp. under influence of Sejanus, vicious, cruel and
tyrannical; strengthened navy; increased wealth of treasury; prob. caused
death of his nephew Germanicus Caesar (19 A.D.); had Sejanus killed (31
A.D.); spent last years of his life (27-37 A.D.) at Capri.
