His paternal grandparents were Count Gottfried I of Metz-Dagsburg and Mathilda of Luxembourg. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Gottfried von, Gregor von, Lothar von, Hugo von, Friedrich von, Dietrich von, Hedwig Von and Ida von. He was the oldest of the nine children. He died in 1174.-
