Count Elger of was born in 1206. Count Elger of's father was Elger II Count of Honstein and his mother was Oda Princess of Magdeburg. His paternal grandparents were Count Elger I of Honstein-Ilfeld and Bertrada Princess of Honstein. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Dietrich II Count of, Count Heinrich I of, Princess Lutrade of and Princess Bertrade of. He was the youngest of the five children.
