of Este, became, in turn Margrave in Liguria, and established the family of
Este in the Veronese. His son, Alberto Azzo II, Margrave of Este, married the
countess Kunigunde Welf of Altdorf. The Welf house of Este (see, e.g., ES i,
58) descends from them. (Apparently Welf III, brother of Kunigunde, having no
children, adopted Kunegunde's son, Welf IV, as his heir.)
