Rotrud's father was Louis I the Pious and her mother was Ermengarde d'Esbay DE HESBAYE. Her paternal grandparents were Charlemagne and Hildegarde of Lizgau VON VINZGAU; her maternal grandfather was Ingram Ingeramne de Lige DE HESBAYE. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Arnulf, Lothair, Pepin, Louis Ludwig II of Germany, Hildegard Matilda of the West, Adele Aelis and Alpaide.
