t. Egbert's father Ealhmund isusually identified as the king of Kentof that name. David Kelleyhaas suggested that the introduction of thepreviously-Kentishname Egbert into the Wessex dynasty at
this time mayindicate adescent from the Kentish royal family. Its an interestingidea, and if cororrect would give a possible Merovingian ancestry tothelater Wessex kings, but there's absolutely no
proof that Iknow of.However, Stewart is right -- Egbert should not bereferred to as "EgbertIIIII".There is no contemporary source forEgbert's wife. The name "Raedburh"comse from a medieval
mlmanuscript quoted by W. G. Searle (Anglo-SaxonBishops, Kings andNobles, London 1899, 343) as "MSS Trin Coll Oxf x". She isdescribed there as "regis Francorum sororia" which can only beareferencnce
to Charlemagne; however there is no such sisterknown. SinceEgbert was certainly in exile at CCharlemagne'scourt, it is perfectlyplausible that he married his wife there. If the tradition hass
anyvalue, then the best guess is that shewas probably a sister-in-law, butshe could just as wellll havebeen a lady of the Court. Settipani (Laprehistoire desCapetiens, 308 n791) is willing to
