Her paternal grandparents were William Mitchell Clay and Tabitha Pierce; her maternal grandparents were Richard Belcher and Mary Obedience Clay. She had seven brothers and seven sisters, named William, Bartley, Charles, David, Ezekiel, Henry J., Mitchell, Patience, Polly, Sarah "Sally", Tabitha, Mary, Nannie and Obedience.-
