Bernard was a nobleman of Saxony and was the first of the ancient and knightly family that made a considerable figure in England. They seem to have been oriinally seated at Poonstock, and it was still the head of their barony in the reign of King John till they exchanged it for other lands. Bernard, Lord of Harcourt, Carleville and Beaufidel in Normandy, was a noble man of royal blood of Saxony. Bernard acquired the above lordships in Normandy, when in 911 Rollo 'the Dane' was granted land by the Franks and founded Normandy in France. Bernard 'the Dane' was the most powerful of the feudal nobles of Normandy during the reign of Duke William I (927-943) and regent during the minority of Duke Richard I.
