Bernard 'The Dane' Harcourt was born aout 860 and died about 955. he was in some way related to the Viking Chieftain Rollo 'The Dane'. He married Sprote de Bourgogne, b. about 900. Bernard, a nobleman of Saxony was the first of the ancient and knightly family which made a considerable figure in England. They seem to have been originally seated at Poonstock, and it was still the head of their barony in the reign of King John till they exchanged it for other lands. Bernard, Lord of Harcourt, Carleville, and Beaufidel in Normandy, was a nobleman of royal blood of Saxony. Bernard de Harcourt acquired the above lordships in Normandy, when in 911 AD Rollo 'The Dane' was granted land by the Franks and founded Normandy in France. Bernard 'the Dane' was the most powerful of the feudal nobles of Normandy during the reign of Duke William I (927-943) and regent during the minority of Duke Richard I.
