Benjamin was born on March 20th, 1872.1   Benjamin's father was John Edwin and his mother was Eugenia Bennett.  His paternal grandparents were John Hill and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were Risden H. Bennett and Charity Ann Ingram. He had two brothers and a sister, named Henry Pines, John Edwin Chapman III and Elizabeth Ann.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
