THOMAS PRATHER
The information that follows was copied from a book entitled "Ancestors and Descendants 1480- 1985 of George W. Prather 1858-1935, Randolph County, Alabama" by John Wallace Prather.\PRATH ERS IN ENGLAND\Although it appears almost certain that our family came to America from Englan d, we are not certain, however, as to who our first American ancestor was. We can trace ou r direct ancestry back to Jonathan and Jane Prather in southern Maryland in the late 1600's . We know that Jonathan moved from Virginia to Maryland in 1658, but we don't know where h e and Jane were born. Mrs. S. J. Doliante of Arkansas, who has done much research on the earl y Prather lines, raises an interesting question when she says, "While the Prater name is know n in England, it has struck us that due to the family's frequent association with persons o f Scots ancestry, Jonathan and Jane may themselves have originated in Scotland." \There i s a fairly general concensus among researchers into Prather family that Thomas Prater (Jr.) w as most likely the father of Jonathan Prather and that Jonathan Prather was born in Virginia . This is by no means proven, however, and research continues in the matter. On the premis e that Thomas Prater (Jr.) is most likely our American progenitor, the following outline of h is English antecedents is provided.\John Prater, born ca. 1480, I nglesham Manor, Wiltshire , England, died before June 20, 1547,and was buried in the Chancel of Inglesham Church, Wilsh ire. He married circa 1505 Elene Kingston, the daughter of Sir Anthy Kingston. Elene died c irca 1557 and is buried in the Chancel of Inglesham Church. John and Elene Prater had two ch ildren, a son named George and a daughter named Jane. Gorge continued this lineage.\George P rater, the sone of John and Elene Prater, was born circa 1510 in Englesham Manor, Wiltshire , England. He died in 1564 at Latton Manor in Wiltshire, England and is buried at Latton Chu rch, Wiltshire. George married circa 1534 Jane Plott, who was born circa 1515. She was th e daughter of Richard Plott of Blenbury or Bleyberye, Berkshire, England. She died January 1 5, 1586, and was buried at Latton Church with her hustand. George and Jane Prater had 10 chi ldren, one of whom was Anthony, the next in this lineage.\Anthony Prater, the son of George a nd Jane Prater, was born at Stanton Manor, Wiltshire, England, which he later inherited. H e died at Stanton Manor in August of 1593 and is buried at Stanton St. Bernard Church in Wilt shire. He married circa 1572 Judith Ivye, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Malet) Ivye. Ju dith was born circa 1550 at West Kingston and was buried in the Ivye section, South Aisle, We st Kingston Church. Her husband placed a plaque in her memory on the church wall. Anthony a nd Judith Prater has six children. One of the youngest, Thomas, was christened on May 6, 15 73. He died as a child (approximately four years of age). Their youngest child, also name d Thomas, was born circa 1577, and continues this lineage.\Thomas Prater, Sr., son of Anthon y and Judith Prater, was born circa 1577 on the manorial estate of his ancestors in West King ston, Wiltshire. He died circa 1628 in Wiltshire. On June 4, 1599, he married Margaret Quin tyne at Clyffe Bypton Church, Wiltshire. She was born circa 1578, in Wiltshire, the daughte r of Henry and Alice (?) Quintyne of Nushton, Wiltshire. Thomas and Margaret Prater had fou r children, the fourth being Thomas Prater (Jr.), born circa 1604. This sone, Thomas, went t o the colony of Virginia in 1622.\PRATERS IN AMERICA\Thomas Prater (Jr.) left England when h e was about 18 years old and arrived in Elizabeth City (Cittie), Virginia (now Newport News) , in 1622 on board the ship "Marie Providence". Master of the ship was Captain Richard Shepp erd. Thomas (Jr.) sold his land rights to the captain for passage money. It was the custo m of the time that the ship's captain would sell these rights to whomever would buy them. Of ten the ones who paid the passage money were relatives from back in England. Captain Shepper d must have been paid for Thomas (Jr.)'s passage by John Powell, as the Muster of the Inhabit ants of Virginia which was taken between January 20 and February 7, 1624-25 lists "Thomas Pra ter aged 20 in the Marie Providence 1622" as a servant in John's household. It took about fi ve years to pay back the passage money. When the money was repaid, the person usually receiv ed 50 acres of land and would be married soon after and start his own household. It is mos t likely that Thomas (Jr.) completed paying for his passage circa 1627 after which he receive d 50 acres of land. He is believed to have married circa 1627-29, but the name of his wife i s not known (another reference found in the files of Aunt Velma Underwood referred to Mary, p ossibly McKay, from Scotland).\For further information on Jonathan, the son of Thomas and Mar y Prather, see their Family Page.\Their son William, was in Maryland in 1658. Nothing furthe r is known.\Nothing further is known of Samuel.\John was granted land Rappahannock County, Vi rginia, in 1664.
Richard was granted land in Rappahannock County, Virginia, February 7, 1661, and 1663.
According to another Prather historian, Mr. Ephraim Stout Lillard, of Washington, D. C., Thom as (Jr.) and his wife had five children (see Family Page).
