Fulk III Nerra 
Fulk III was born in 0956 in of Anjou, France.1 Fulk III's father was Geoffrey Greymantle and his mother was Adelaide de Vermandois. His paternal grandparents were Fulk II le Bon de Anjou and Gerberge de Gastinois; his maternal grandparents were Robert de Vermandois and Adelaide de Bourgogne. He had two sisters named Adela de and Ermangarde D'. He was the oldest of the three children. He died at the age of 84 on June 21st, 1040 in Metz, Middle Lorraine, France.1 General Notes

MEDI Manuscript"Not all founders [of monasteries] were known for their kindness. Fulk of Anj ou, plunderer, murderer, robber, and swearer of false oaths, a truly terrifying character o f fiendish cruelty, founded not one but two large abbeys. This Fulk was filled with unbridle d passion, a temper directed to extremes. Whenever he had the slightest difference with a ne ighbor he rushed upon his lands, ravaging, pillaging, raping, and killing; nothing could sto p him, least of all the commandments of God. This appalling man had countless crimes upon hi s conscience, but when seized with a fit of remorse he abandoned himself to incredible penanc es. Thus the very tomb of St. Martin, whose monks he had ill-treated, saw him prostrate, wit h bare feet and in penitent's dress; and four times during his life he went to Jerusalem a s a devout pilgrim, treading half-naked the sorrowful road of the passion while two of his se rvants flogged him until the blood flowed, crying, "Lord, receive thy perjured Fulk!"
