Richard was born about 1138.1 Richard's father was Elias Giffard and his mother was Bertha (de Clifford) FitzRichard. His paternal grandparents were Elias Giffard and Ala Giffard; his maternal grandparents were Richard FitzPons and Maud FitzWalter. He had four brothers and a sister, named Walter, Gilbert, Elis IV, William and Berta.-
