His paternal grandparents were Richard FITZGILBERT and Rohese GIFFARD; his maternal grandparents were Hugh de CLERMONT and Margaret de MONTDIDIER. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Walter de, Gilbert FitzGilbert de, Hervey de, Baldwin FitzGilbert de, Adeliza (Alice) de, Rohesia de, Margaret and Rose de.
