His paternal grandparents were Robert le Brus and Emma de Brittany; his maternal grandparents were Waldron de St Clare and Helena Le Bon. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Philip de, John de, Matilda, Miss de and Hortense de. He was the third youngest of the six children.-
