Hugh de was born about 1050 in Of, Avranches, Normandy, France.1 Hugh de's father was Richard le Goz and his mother was Emma de CONTEVILLE. His paternal grandparents were Toustien le Goz and Judith de Monterolier; his maternal grandparents were Herluin de Conteville and Herleva De Falaise. He had a brother and five sisters, named Guimond de, Albreda de, Judith de, Maud de, Arbella Loup de and Helsinde de. _FA3 PLAC Told to hold Chester " as freely by the sword" as William did so re: England.The Pa latine Earldom of Chester is now vested in the British Crrown, and is traditionally a title h eld by the Prince of Wales. In 1071, William the Conqueror made his nephew, Hugh Earl of Ches ter, giving him the whole of the county Palatine of Chester "...to hold as freely by the swor d as he [the King] himself held the kingdom of England by the crown" As Count or Earl Palatin e he had extradordinary authority within his provinces - this was seen as necessary due to th e need to defend the Marches from the incursions of the Welsh - and as such he had his own Co urt and hereditary barons who each had their own jurisdiction, and power of "life and death " - legend has it that the Barons of Malpas, (later the Egertons from whom the Wedgwoods of H arracles etc. descend) were particularly prone to sentence the latter. The hereditary Baron s created by Hugh are as follows, after the reversion of the Earldom with the crown, these di gnities became only titular.
