Matilda's father was Joshua Nicholson and her mother was Mary Kirby. Her paternal grandparents were Joshua Nicholson and Sarah Briggs; her maternal grandparents were William Kirby and Mary. She had a brother and two sisters, named Charles Briggs, Fanny and Lucy.
