Hereward (le Wake) Mercia

Hereward, known as le Wake, was born about 1004 in Mercia, England.¹ Le Wake's father was Leofric (The Great) Mercia III and his mother was Godgifu of Coventry. His paternal grandparents were Earl of Mercia Leofwine and Alwara of Mercia; his maternal grandparents were Sheriff of Lincoln Thorold of Buckingham and Beatrice Malet. He had a brother named The Saxon. He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-sister. He died about 1080 in Crowland, Lincolnshire, England.²

- Hereward, Mercian Thegn, who led the Anglo-Saxon resistence to William I (The Conqueror) 1071 and who apparently got back his pre-conquest lands at Witham, Barholm, and Rippingale about the time of the Domesday Suvey 1086. [Burke's Peerage]

  Harold de Wake or Herwaldus or Hewaldus, as it is observed by Dr. Patrick, was the first who gave rise to the name of Wake, and was surnamed de Wake or le Wake. He was one of the bravest heroes of his age and country, whose actions are celebrated by Ingulphus; and was the last who submitted to William, the Conqueror.
