Stephen was born about 1117 in Bulmer, North Riding, Yorkshire, England.¹ Stephen's father was Lord Ferlington Aschetil de Bulmer and his mother was Humez Powther. His paternal grandparents were Alan de Bulmer and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were John Powther and <Unknown>. He had two brothers and a sister, named Ralph, Burtram and Sibyl. He was the third oldest of the four children. He died in 1172.²
