Matthew was born in 1715 and her baptism took place on November 6th, 1715 in North Creak.¹

Matthew's father was Robert Welles and her mother was Mary Welles. She had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Ann, Mary and Alice.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
