Stanley was born on January 12th, 1885 in India.  Stanley's father was George William Sawday and his mother was Sarah (Trot) Baron Curnock.  His paternal grandparents were George Sawday and Mary Ann Burt; his maternal grandparents were George Curnock and Mary Strickland. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Albert Ernest, George Curnock, Kathleen, Muriel, Edith Nuttall and Dorothy. He had a half-sister.
