James' father was James Distill and his mother was Ann Beach.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Distill and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Beach and Catharine Borkett. He had two brothers and six sisters, named William, Henry, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane, Susannah and Charlotte.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
