James' father was Henry Clarke and his mother was Elizabeth Gibson.  His paternal grandparents were John Clarke and Hannah Flatt; his maternal grandparents were Jacob Gibson and Elizabeth Bray. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Sarah, Ann, Rebecca and Martha.  He was the oldest of the six children. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Henry, William, Robert, Rebecca, Rebecca and Sarah.
