Ellis was born before 1592 and his baptism took place on January 23rd, 1592 in Horsham Sussex.¹

Ellis' father was John Stere and his mother was Alice Forman. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Elizabeth, Joane and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
