Sarah's father was Edwin Steer and her mother was Mary Ann Spooner.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Sarah steer. She had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Fred, Albert, Elizabeth, Emma, Mary and Harriot.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
