Richard was born in 1807 and his baptism took place on May 12th, 1807 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.1   Richard's father was Henry Steer and his mother was Lydia Etherton. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Henry, Edward, Job, Zebedee, Hannah, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
