Mary was born in 1858 in Billingshurst Sussex and her baptism took place there on April 16th, 1858.1  Mary's mother was Eliza Steer.  Her maternal grandparents were William Steer and Emily (Imlen). She had two brothers and three sisters, named James, Clement, Charlotte, Caroline and Ann.  She was the second oldest of the six children.  Mary is no longer alive.
