Maria was born in 1872 in Peckham, Surrey.1  Maria's father was Henry Steer and her mother was Sarah Humphrey.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Elizabeth; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Humfrey and Maria. She had five brothers and a sister, named Henry, George, Walter, Edwin, Alfred and Sarah.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
