Kate Louise was born in 1873 in Stratford, Essex, England.  Kate Louise's father was Thomas George Steer and her mother was Louisa Dix.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Alfred Steer and Sarah Ann Louisa Clark. She had six brothers and a sister, named George Henry Thomas, Sarah Ann, Arthur Alfred, Henry Scotia, Charles Frederick, Percy and Maud Gowlett.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
