Jane was born in 1871 in Itchingfield Sussex.1  Jane's father was George Steer and her mother was Hannah Farley. She had five brothers and two sisters, named George, William, Henry, James, Alfred, Alice and Ann.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
