Gertrude was born in 1897 in Egdean Sussex.1  Gertrude's father was Henry James Steer and her mother was Gertrude Clark.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Steer and Annie Elizabeth Emery. She had a sister named Marjorie.  She was the older of the two children.
