George was born in 1868 in Petworth.1  George's father was Thomas Steer and his mother was Harriett Ward. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, Charlie, Joseph, Alfred, Kate, Lydia, Bessie, Annie, Lydia, Harty and Bessie.
