George was born on August 21st, 1811 in Petworth and his baptism took place there on September 29th, 1811.1  George's father was James Steer and his mother was Anne. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, Daniel, Elizth, Eliza, Mary and Maria.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
