Emma was born in 1843 and her baptism took place on December 18th, 1843 in Petworth.1  Emma's father was James Steer and her mother was Sarah.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Steer and Sarah steer. She had a brother and three sisters, named George, Ellen, Emily and Annie.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
