Emily was born in 1843 in Wisborough Green, Sussex and her baptism took place there on December 17th, 1843.1 2  Emily's father was Stephen Steer and her mother was Harriet Dinnage. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Stephen, Mark, Ellen, Miriam, Harriet, Mary and Sarah.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
