Ellen was born in 1830 and her baptism took place on June 12th, 1831 in Billingshurst Sussex.1 2  Ellen's father was James Steer and her mother was Sarah. She had a brother and three sisters, named Jasper, Rhodah, Mercy and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
