Eliza was born in 1838 in Petworth and her baptism took place there on February 11th, 1838.1 2  Eliza's father was Thomas Steer and her mother was Jane Smith. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, George, James, Robert, Edward, Elizabeth and Ann.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
