Edwin was born on February 22nd, 1825 in Croydon Surrey.  Edwin's father was Thomas Steer and his mother was Maria Stanyon. He had eight brothers and two sisters, named Alfred William, Charles Benjamin, George, Thomas Alfred, Edwin, Frederick James, William Barnet, Sabin Esther, Maria Catherine and Emma Maria.
