Alfred was born in 1878 in Rudgwick, Sussex.1  Alfred's father was William Steer and his mother was Elizabeth.  His paternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Caroline Steer; his maternal grandparents were Francis and Elizabeth. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Kate.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-sister named Eliza.
