James was born about 1883 in Tintwistle, Cheshire.1   James' father was William STEERS and his mother was Lydia Kirkham.  His maternal grandfather was James KIRKHAM and his maternal grandmother is <Unknown>. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Jessie.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
