William was born about 1861 in Sussex.1   William's father was John STEER and his mother was Ellen White.  His maternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Edwin, Alice, Elizabeth and Emma.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
