Thomas was born about 1842 in Hemingfield, Yorkshire.1   Thomas' father was George STEER and his mother was Fanny STEER. He had four brothers and a sister, named Walter, Truelove, Farewell, Harrison and Charlotte.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
