Sophia was born in 1863 in Croydon Surrey. Sophia's father was Alfred William STEER and her mother was Mary Ann ATKINS.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas STEER and Catharine Maria STANYON. She had a brother and three sisters, named Alfred Thomas, Sabina Esther, Mary Ann and Alice.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
