John was born about 1845 in Bovey Tracey Devon.1   John's father was Joseph STEER and his mother was Mary STEER. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Nicholas, Charles, Jonas, Thomas, Sarah and Elizabeth.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
