John was born about 1837 in Bovey Tracey Devon.1   John's father was Jonas STEER and his mother was Sarah STEER. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Jonas, Charles, Joseph, Sarah, Jane, Ann, Emma and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
