John was born about 1878 in Bishops Tawton, Devon.1   John's father was George STEER and his mother was Mary STEER.  His paternal grandfather was George STEER and his paternal grandmother is <Unknown>. He had a brother and three sisters, named Henry, Ida, Louisa and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
