John was born in 1839 in Edenbridge Kent. John's father was George STEER and his mother was Mary CREASY.  His paternal grandparents were George STEER and Mary MITCHELL. He had three brothers and two sisters, named George, Edward, Reuben, Anne and Hannah.  He was the youngest of the six children.
