John was born in 1830 in Seal, Kent.. John's father was George STEER and his mother was Ann BOLDING.  His paternal grandfather was William STEER. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William, James Simon Bartholomew, John, Thomas, Ann, Hannah, Sarah, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the ten children.
